Consultancy
If you enjoy doing your own research but perhaps need some strategies for breaking down a brick wall, or suggestions to get the best out of your DNA results.
Fees and Payment
Research Fees
My current research fees are £30 (EUR 35/US $40/ Aus $60) per hour (subject to alteration depending on current exchange rates). Exact prices will be confirmed in the client agreement.
A free 30-minute consultation by video call, or equivalent email correspondence is included in all bespoke or fixed price research to establish your research requirements.
Additional Costs
It is often necessary to obtain original documents (such as birth, marriage or death certificates) to progress the research, as these contain valuable details not available on websites. These will be obtained at cost price and only with your prior agreement.
The current prices for certificates and images ordered from the UK General Register Office are:
£12.50 per printed certificate
£8.00 per PDF image (these are not always available)
£3.00 per digital image (these are not always available)
Archive Travel
If it proves necessary for me to travel to an archive to research on your behalf, you will be invoiced for my travel costs by public transport or car mileage.
Some archives make a small charge for photos/photocopies of documents and these costs are also chargeable.
You will be advised of these costs in advance and the archive trip will only be undertaken with your prior agreement and receipts will be provided.
Once your requirements have been fully discussed and terms have been agreed, you will be invoiced 50% of the total fee. Research will only begin once this has been received. The remaining 50% of the fee will be invoiced on completion of the work and you will be sent your completed report on receipt. For further details, see Terms and Conditions.

What’s included in all options
-
A free 30-minute consultation to discuss your requirements.
-
Research time.
-
You will receive a software-generated family tree chart to include the vital facts (birth, marriage death) of the named persons.
-
A fully-referenced software-generated report, giving all the information discovered in census returns, civil and parish records, generation by generation.
The report and chart will be in PDF format and emailed to you.
Bespoke Research
If none of the Fixed Price options meet your requirements, or if you wish to receive a narrative report, research can be carried out on a per-hour basis and the costs will be very similar.
The time taken to create a bespoke client report on seven persons is approximately seven to ten hours of research, plus a further seven to ten hours of report writing.
See Examples of my Work for what you can expect to receive for this option.
Decorative wallchart
As an alternative to the basic family tree chart, I can prepare a PDF of a decorative, software-generated keepsake chart, for you to have printed and framed. This makes a lovely keepsake gift for a special occasion, such as a milestone birthday or anniversary. The cost will depend on how much information you already have but, as with the other options, will be calculated at the same hourly rate.
See Examples of my Work for what you can expect to receive for this option.
Consultancy
If you
-
enjoy researching your family tree yourself but have come across a particular problem which is preventing you from progressing
-
have taken a DNA test and received your results but are not sure what to do next
-
wish to obtain Irish citizenship through a parent or grandparent born in Ireland
A consultancy service is available for £30 per hour. After the free 30-minute consultation, during which the issue can be outlined, a search strategy report will be created to suggest a way forward. Any ongoing support will be charged at £30 per hour.
Transcription
A transcription service can be provided at £30 per hour to help decipher documents which are difficult to read. Prices will depend on the length and legibility of the document and an estimate will be given after the free 30-minute consultation.
You will receive a typed report transcribing document with original spelling, but with explanatory of any abbreviations, unusual words or any other details.
